Barcelona just got their first goal and first points in the 2021/22 Champions League campaign on Wednesday against Dynamo Kyiv. For the first time in their entire history, the Catalan giants had to wait for the third game of the Champions League season to record a goal or a point.
In his first year, 2009, he gave Barcelona their first treble and became the first ever coach to win 6 trophies in a year.
It was a phenomenal period. Barcelona were unstoppable. Even when they were down, you just got the feeling that they would somehow eventually win. People even got tired of Barcelona’s league games because it felt like they just always won.
But surely, the fans never got tired. They looked forward to every game with excitement and confidence. They wanted that to last forever. This was why when Pep Guardiola made that infamous statement in his final season with the club, which didn’t exactly sit well with the fans.
“This won’t last forever.” The Spanish football manager declared. “Sooner or later, we will stop winning. Then is when we will have to see if we have faith in the way we are and the way we play.”
Why would he even say that? What was this prophecy of doom? And to worsen things for the fans, he left the club at the end of that season. The fans weren’t happy. This was supposed to last forever. There shouldn’t have been an end. And if at all there would be, not that soon.
